Student election workers are an important part of our Election Day success. We hope that you or your student will consider partnering with us to make democracy happen in Wyandotte County!

Program Requirements

To be a student election worker, you must meet all of the following requirements:

  • Be a resident of Wyandotte County

  • Be a registered voter (except in the case of high school students under the age of 18)

  • Meet all requirements of a regular election worker, but can be as young as 16

  • Be available to work at least 14 consecutive hours on Election Day, beginning at 6 a.m.

  • Attend training of approximately four hours duration before each election

  • Be available and released from school for the entirety of Election Day

  • Have transportation to and from your assigned polling place

  • Have a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator at your school

  • Student election workers can choose to be paid the standard hourly rate for their position or can forfeit that pay and receive a certification of their community service hours from the Election Commissioner. Community service hours or compensation include all hours worked on Election Day and any time spent in the required training course. 

  • Due to the signature requirements (student and parent/guardian), an online application process is not available for the student election application. Please use the form below. In addition, the student is responsible for obtaining the required letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or administrator at his or her school. Incomplete applications will not be reviewed.

  • This program helps educate the student body of local schools so they feel more comfortable voting in elections as they become 18 years old. The youth engagement program started out as an outreach program, but has since grown into a partnership with local schools that allows students to give back to their community by volunteering to work at Polling Places on Election Day.
